For video makers
Clip the last two minutes, highlights that mark themselves, photo mode for thumbnails, flying a camera path, orbits and camera shake, named shots, framing guides, hiding names, and everyone's point of view.
Hindsight has a set of tools for making videos from your sessions quickly: catching the moment, finding the good bits, setting up shots and getting thumbnails. Everything here works with the rest of the replay editor and video export.
Clip that
Something great just happened? Press F10 while playing. The last two minutes of the session are saved as a replay of their own, named like 2026-10-23_18-04-11 clip 18-06-02.hsr, while recording carries on as normal. The clip opens on the Replays screen like any replay, starting at the moment it was clipped from.
Change how far back a clip goes with clipSeconds in config/hindsight-client.properties (120 by default).
Highlights mark themselves
While recording, Hindsight drops a marker by itself when:
- you die, or kill another player;
- another player dies;
- someone earns an advancement;
- a boss fight starts;
- something explodes;
- a word you’ve chosen appears in chat.
Pick the words with highlightWords in config/hindsight-client.properties, separated by commas, for example highlightWords=gg,clip,lol. Turn automatic markers off with autoMarkers=false. The same kind of moment is marked at most once every ten seconds, so a big fight doesn’t fill the timeline.
In the editor, < Marker and Marker > jump between markers and say what each one was, like “Steve died”.
Photo mode
Press F9 while watching a replay or a timelapse, or Photo in the editor (or on the timelapse camera row) to choose first:
| Setting | Choices |
|---|---|
| Size | The window’s, 1080p, 4K, 8K (7680 × 4320), Vertical (2160 × 3840) or Square (2160 × 2160). |
| In the picture | Everything; No sky (see-through, ready to cut out); Just this player (the player you’re looking at, on a see-through background); or Just the build (no players or mobs). |
The HUD and screens are left out. Photos are saved as PNG in .minecraft/hindsight/photos/, and chat says where. They make great thumbnails: drop a see-through player over any background.
Shots
The top row of the replay editor is for setting up shots.
Record a path by flying
Press Record path. The editor closes; fly the shot as you’d like it to look, with the replay playing or paused, at any speed. Hindsight keyframes the camera twice a second, along with the replay’s moment, and a red light in the corner shows it’s recording. Press ’ to open the editor again, which stops recording. The keyframes are smoothed like any path, so shaky mouse movement comes out steady, and you can change them afterwards like any others. A recorded path goes on the end of the current one.
Orbit
Look at something and press Orbit. Hindsight adds one slow circle (24 seconds) around the player you’re looking at, or else the block in the middle of the screen, at your current distance and height, always looking at it. It plays in real time from the replay’s current moment, or holds time still if the replay is paused.
Camera shake
Shake gives the whole path a gentle handheld wobble: Light or Handheld. It’s the same every time the path plays, so previews match the export. It isn’t used while watching through someone’s eyes.
Named shots
Press Shots to keep several camera paths in one replay: a wide shot, a close-up, an orbit. Type a name and press Save current to keep the editor’s path under that name; Load puts a saved shot back into the editor; x deletes one. Queue all shots adds every saved shot to the export queue with the current settings.
Shots are saved in the replay file. In ReplayMod’s format they’re its saved presets, so ReplayMod sees them too.
Framing guides
Press Guides in the editor to show rule-of-thirds lines over the replay. When the export size has a different shape from your window (vertical video on a widescreen monitor, say), the area outside the exported picture is dimmed, so you can see exactly what will be in the video.
Names and skins
In visuals, each player in the list has a … button: give them another name to show in the replay, or a plain default skin instead of their own. Anonymous shows everyone as “Player 1”, “Player 2” and so on, with plain skins. It’s all for the replay and its videos only (and its subtitles), and resets when you leave.
Everyone’s point of view
When several people record the same session (everyone on a server with Hindsight installed records their own), put their recordings in your hindsight/replays/ folder. Then, in the editor, press Other views: it lists the other recordings of the same world that were running at the moment on screen.
- Click one to switch to that recording at the same moment, watching through the eyes of the player who made it.
- Queue everyone’s view adds the editor’s shot (its stretch of time, or 30 seconds from now without a path) to the export queue once for each recording, in first person through each player’s eyes. Edit them together for a multi-camera video.
Recordings are lined up by the real time they were made, so they match to within the recording computers’ clocks, usually well under a second.
