Questions and fixes
Answers to common questions about Hindsight's timelapses and replays, and fixes for the usual problems.
Timelapses
“Nothing has been built near you since Hindsight was installed”
Hindsight only knows about changes made after it was installed, and looks about 96 blocks around you. Build something, or stand closer to the build, and try again.
The outline covers too much, or too little
Use the - and + buttons on the panel to move each side. Move sides by switches to 8 blocks at a time for big builds. If two separate builds keep getting joined together, move the sides in until only the one you want is inside.
Some blocks are there from the start, or never change
Those weren’t recorded. Either they were there before Hindsight was installed, or they changed on their own (water flowing, trees growing, leaves decaying), which isn’t recorded unless the server turns it on. See what gets recorded.
Who are the people walking around in my timelapse?
They’re ghost builders: the players who built the area, shown where they stood while they built. They only exist on your screen. See ghost builders.
Does a timelapse change my world?
No. It only swaps blocks on the screens of the people watching. The world on the server, or in your singleplayer save, is never touched, and everything snaps back when you leave.
“Hindsight isn’t installed on this server”
Timelapses need Hindsight on the server, because the server keeps the history. Without it there’s nothing to replay. Session replays still work: they only need Hindsight in your own game.
Someone keeps sharing timelapses with me
Press Esc to leave one. To decline them all, set acceptShared=false in config/hindsight-client.properties. See watching together.
Replays
Does replay recording work on servers without Hindsight?
Yes. Recording happens entirely in your own game, so it works on any server, and in singleplayer. Some servers have rules about recording, so check if you’re not sure.
How do I stop it recording?
Press Record worlds or Record servers on the Replays screen, or set recordSingleplayer=false or recordMultiplayer=false in config/hindsight-client.properties. See recording replays.
Where are my replays?
In .minecraft/hindsight/replays/ (or your launcher’s instance folder). Open folder on the Replays screen takes you there.
My game crashed while recording. Is the replay lost?
Usually not. Unfinished recordings are rescued the next time you start Minecraft, and appear on the Replays screen as normal.
Why can’t I watch this replay?
- It was recorded on a different Minecraft version. The Replays screen shows which version it needs. A replay only opens on the version it was recorded on, so open it in that version.
- It was recorded with mods you don’t have. A replay of a modded world needs the same mods installed to watch it.
- It’s a NeoForge recording in ReplayMod or Flashback. Those run on Fabric, so they need the same content on the Fabric side. See limits.
Jumping back in a replay is slow
Hindsight’s own recordings keep a snapshot of the world every five minutes, and while you watch any replay Hindsight keeps one every minute, so jumping back starts from the nearest snapshot and is quick. The first jump back in a ReplayMod replay, to a part you haven’t watched yet, starts from the beginning and can take a few seconds.
Can I open my old ReplayMod or Flashback recordings?
Yes. They’re listed on the Replays screen, and ReplayMod files open as they are. Flashback files are converted with Import & watch. See moving from ReplayMod and Flashback.
Video export
Do I need FFmpeg to export video?
No. Hindsight has a built-in encoder that makes the MP4. If you install FFmpeg, it’s used instead, for smaller, sharper files. See exporting video.
Can I get PNG frames instead of an MP4?
Yes. In Export settings, set File: PNG pictures, and every frame is saved as a numbered PNG that any video editor can import, with the sound beside them as sound.wav. See export settings.
Does the video have sound?
Yes: the game’s sound is recorded in step with the picture, voice chat included. Turn it off with Sound in the export settings. See sound.
How do I export in 1080p, 4K or vertical?
Pick the size under Picture in the export settings. It doesn’t depend on your window, so 4K works on a 1080p screen, and Vertical makes 1080 × 1920 videos for Shorts and TikTok.
Can I make 360° videos?
Yes: View: 360° video in the export settings. YouTube, VLC and VR headsets show the result as a sphere you can look around in. See 360° video.
Everything else
Does it work with Sodium, Iris and shaders?
Yes. Timelapse blocks are drawn by the game’s normal block rendering, so they look like the rest of your world with any of these. Replays and video exports show your shaders too.
Does it work with modded blocks?
Yes. Modded blocks are recorded and rebuilt like any other, and Create contraptions are recorded as they move.
Can I use Hindsight in my modpack, or in videos and streams?
Yes, please do. See credits for the licence.
