    Next time

How Last Words works out what would have saved you, from Feather Falling IV to a golden apple, and what "(you'd have lived)" means.

Under Next time, the recap gives up to two tips on what would have saved you. They’re worked out with vanilla’s own damage formulas from the hits you really took, so “Feather Falling IV would have stopped 20” is the real sum for that fall, not a guess.

    The tips

    Tip When it comes up
Feather Falling IV would have stopped… Fall damage.
Fire Resistance would have stopped all… Fire damage, when you didn’t have Fire Resistance.
Blast Protection IV would have stopped… Explosions.
Projectile Protection IV would have stopped… Arrows, tridents and other projectiles.
Protection IV on all your armour would have stopped… Damage that enchantments can reduce, when you were wearing armour.
A full set of iron armour would have stopped… Damage that armour can reduce, when your armour was weaker than a full iron set.
A shield would have stopped… Hits from a mob, a player or an explosion that you didn’t block, when you had no shield in hand.
Blocking with your shield would have stopped… The same, when you had a shield but weren’t blocking.
Water Breathing would have stopped all… Drowning.
Eating would have stopped all… Starving.
A golden apple’s absorption hearts would have taken… Only when they would have been enough to keep you alive.

Each tip says how much it would have stopped, never more than what you lost, and tips worth less than half a heart aren’t shown. If a tip would have been enough to keep you alive, it ends with (you’d have lived), and those tips come first. Protection IV and the other Protection-style tips (Feather Falling, Blast, Projectile) overlap, so you won’t get both about the same damage.

    They’re estimates

    • Each tip is worked out on its own: two tips don’t add up to what both together would have done.
    • Health you regained between hits (from food or regeneration) is left out.

    When there are no tips

    • The tips need Last Words on the server, which measures every hit exactly. On a server without it, your game doesn’t know what your armour stopped, so it can’t work them out.
    • Server owners can turn them off with showTips.
    • If nothing on the list would have helped (a /kill, say), there’s no tip.
