The death replay
Replay the last 3 seconds before you died, the final half second in slow motion, on any server. What it records, and why it never changes your world.
The recap’s ▶ Replay button (top right, where “last 10s” sits) plays back the last 3 seconds before you died:
- The fight plays out, with each hit from the recap popping up as it lands (“-4.3 Zombie”) and a timeline along the bottom marking them.
- The final half second plays in slow motion.
- A short hold, then you’re back on the death screen.
Click or press any key to skip it.
The camera
One steady shot, no orbits or cuts:
- side-on to you and your killer if they were close,
- or from behind you, with them in the distance, if they were far away.
It’s pulled in if a wall is in the way, and drifts at most a block.
What it records
While you’re alive, your game keeps the last 5 seconds of:
- you, and the mobs, players and projectiles (arrows, tridents, fireballs, potions…) within 24 blocks, up to 48 of them: where they were, which way they faced, walking, swinging and getting hurt, their pose, whether they were on fire, and what they held and wore, so the copies look the same (a sheep’s colour, a slime’s size, a baby, an arrow’s potion…);
- every block that changed within 24 blocks.
It’s only kept in memory, never saved to disk, and it’s just a few numbers per tick.
It never changes your world
The replay happens on your screen only:
- The fight is played by copies (a player’s has their skin), while the real ones and your body are hidden, and you watch through the replay’s own camera.
- Blocks that changed are set back to how they were and changed again as they did, on your game only, with no neighbour updates or drops. When it ends, every block is put back as it really is now, including anything the server changed while it played.
- Blocks with contents (chests, signs, furnaces) are left alone, so nothing in them can be lost.
- A real arrow still lying about on your game is moved out of sight and frozen until the end, then put back.
Because it’s all on your own game, the replay works on any server, with or without Last Words there.
Good to know
- The replay is of your latest death. Older deaths in
/lastwordsdon’t have one. - Blocks with contents aren’t rewound in the replay.
- To turn the recording off, switch off Replay my deaths (
replay) in your settings.
