Servers and modpacks
What Last Words does with and without the mod on the server and on each player's game, how it handles modded mobs, damage and grave mods, and common questions.
Last Words is optional on both sides. Players without it can join a server that has it, and players with it can join servers without it. What you get depends on where it’s installed.
Who gets what
| Server | Your game | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Has it | Has it | The full recap on the death screen. The server measures every hit, so what armour, enchantments, effects, shields and absorption stopped is exact, and it knows your killer’s weapon and health, the damage you dealt, the tips and your items’ despawn time. Share posts one line with the recap in its hover. |
| Has it | Doesn’t | A short recap in chat: the total and top sources (hover for what was stopped), the killer with their health and weapon, what you dealt back, the tips, and where you died (click to copy). /lastwords and /lastwords share work too. It’s in English only, since your game has no Last Words language files. |
| Doesn’t | Has it | Your game measures what it can. Every game is told when you’re hurt and by what, and your health, so each drop in health is matched to the damage behind it. Your killer, their weapon (what they’re holding) and health, where you died, the arrow back, your history, the replay and Share (as a plain chat message) all work. What armour and the like stopped, the damage you dealt, the tips and the items timer aren’t known, and the panel says so. |
| Doesn’t | Doesn’t | Nothing. |
In singleplayer your game is the server too, so you get everything.
Installing on a server
Put Last Words in the server’s mods folder (with Fabric API on Fabric) and restart. Nothing else to set up: the settings are in commands and settings, and the defaults suit most servers. Giving it to your players is up to you: it’s safe to add to a server where only some of them have it.
Modded mobs and damage
Nothing special is needed:
- Names come from the mob itself (custom names included), or from the damage type’s language key
tglastwords.damage.<namespace>.<path>. With no entry there, the name is made from the damage type’s id, somekanism:radiationreads “Radiation”. A mod or resource pack can name its types properly by adding the key. - Icons: mobs show their spawn eggs, modded eggs too. Damage types get an item picked from the words in their name (anything with “burn” gets fire, “radiation” or “acid” a spider eye, “explosion” TNT), or else a skull.
- Other mods’ armour and resistances are counted: the recap shows what they stopped, and a hit’s breakdown shows what other mods changed.
Grave mods
Any grave mod is found by the #tglastwords:graves tags or by its name, and the arrow points at the grave. Checked with GraveStone and Corail Tombstone. See graves.
What it costs
- The server only looks at hits involving a player, so mobs fighting mobs cost nothing. It keeps up to 128 hits taken and 128 dealt per player for the recap window, builds each recap once, when the player dies, and keeps each player’s last one in memory for sharing and admins.
- The client compares a few numbers per tick. The replay keeps the last few seconds nearby in memory only, never on disk.
Questions
Can players fake a shared death?
Not on a server with Last Words: the shared line and its hover are made from the server’s own copy of the death.
I run a PvP server. Can I keep some of it secret?
Yes. Turn off shareKillerHealth to hide how much health the killer had left, or shareLocation to hide where players died. showTips, allowSharing and findGraves turn off the tips, sharing and the grave finder.
Why does my recap say “Measured by your game”?
The server didn’t send a recap: either it doesn’t have Last Words, or it has sendToClients turned off. Your game measured what it could. See the table above.
Players without the mod get a chat recap. Can I turn it off, or give it to everyone?
Yes: chatSummary is OFF, PLAYERS_WITHOUT_MOD (the default) or EVERYONE. Only the player who died sees it.
Does it work with doImmediateRespawn?
Yes. There’s no death screen, so the chat line has a [Recap] link that opens the recap.
Does the replay change my world?
No. It plays on your screen only, and every block is put back exactly as it really is when it ends. See the death replay.
My grave mod isn’t found
Most grave mods are found by name. If yours calls its graves something else, add them to the tags with a datapack, and check graveSearchRadius. See a grave that isn’t found.
Where’s my death history?
In your own game folder, under tglastwords/history/: your last 10 deaths for each world and server.
