The arrow back and graves
The bar that points you back to where you died, the countdown until your items despawn, and how Last Words finds the grave any grave mod makes.
The arrow back to your stuff
After you respawn, a small bar at the top of the screen points back to where you died:
- An arrow and the distance (“22m”), with how far up or down.
- Items 4:12: the time left before your dropped items despawn.
Items only age while their area is loaded, so the timer pauses (and says so) while you’re too far away. If you died in another dimension, the bar says which one (“☠ Died in the Nether”).
The bar goes away once you get within 3 blocks, at your next death, or when you type /lastwords hide. You can turn it off altogether in your settings.
The arrow works on any server. The items timer needs Last Words on the server, which knows when your items dropped.
Grave mods
If a grave mod makes a grave for your death, Last Words points you to the grave instead:
- The arrow points at the grave (“Grave 26m”).
- The recap’s footer says where it is, in place of the items timer.
- A chat line names it with its coordinates, which you can click to copy (“Your grave (Gravestone) is at [42, -60, 5]”). Players without Last Words get that line too.
How graves are found
No grave mod is special-cased. When a player dies, the server notes the graves already nearby, then looks again over the next two seconds for a new block or entity that is either:
- in the
#tglastwords:gravesblock tag or entity type tag, or - named like a grave: “gravestone”, “tomb”, “corpse”, “death chest” or “headstone” (but not “gravel”).
It looks graveSearchRadius blocks across from the death spot (32 by default) at any height, since grave mods move graves out of lava or up from the void.
This was checked with GraveStone and Corail Tombstone in an automated test. You’re in Grave Danger, Corpse and death chest mods are covered by the same rules.
A grave that isn’t found
If your grave mod calls its graves something else, add its block or entity to the tags with a datapack:
data/tglastwords/tags/block/graves.jsonfor a grave block,data/tglastwords/tags/entity_type/graves.jsonfor a grave entity.
For example:
{
"values": ["examplemod:memorial"]
}
If graves end up far from where players die, raise graveSearchRadius (up to 128). Server owners can turn grave finding off with findGraves.
