    Vocals

Sing in Block Band with your microphone. The pitch lane, phrase ratings, choosing a mic, privacy, and Simple Voice Chat support.

Pick Vocals on a song that has words (in the built-in songs, Jingle Bells, When the Saints Go Marching In, Greensleeves and the ten sea shanties) and sing along.

    The vocals screen

    • The lane across the top shows the tune. Each bar is a syllable, and higher bars are higher notes.
    • The arrow on the line at the left is the note you’re singing. It turns green when you’re on the note, with a trail of what you just sang behind it.
    • The words of the line you’re singing light up underneath, with the next line below.
    • Any octave counts, so low and high voices can sing any part.
    • Words marked as spoken (drawn as an outline) just need to be heard, at any pitch.

    Ratings and score

Each line gets a rating when it ends: Awful, Messy, Okay, Good, Strong or Awesome.

Difficulty How close you need to be How much of each note to sing for Awesome
    Easy 3 semitones Half
    Medium 2 semitones 60%
    Hard 1.3 semitones 70%
    Expert 0.8 semitones 80%

Each line rated Okay or better adds one to your multiplier (up to 4x); a Messy or Awful one resets it. Lines shown in light blue are overdrive lines: rate Good or better to fill the overdrive bar, then press Space or Left Shift to use it.

While someone sings, the recorded tune plays quietly as a guide. Change how loud with Vocals: guide tune volume in Settings.

    Your microphone

Open Microphone in the Block Band menu to pick a microphone and test it. It shows a level meter and the note you’re singing. Automatic uses the microphone Simple Voice Chat is set to if you have it, otherwise your system’s default.

Your voice stays on your computer. Block Band only listens while you’re singing a song or have the Microphone screen open. The sound is never recorded or sent anywhere: only your score is.

Use headphones if you can. A microphone near speakers hears the song’s own tune and scores that.

    Simple Voice Chat

Block Band doesn’t need it, but if you have Simple Voice Chat:

    • your band and anyone nearby hear you sing through voice chat,
    • the vocals screen tells you whether they can hear you, and reminds you to hold your push-to-talk key,
    • on servers with both mods, each band gets its own voice chat group, so the band can talk and hear the singer from anywhere. Players already in a group stay in theirs. Servers can turn this off (see Running a server).

Without it, vocals score exactly the same; other players just can’t hear you.
